Babysitter Safety Training

South Shore Medical Center has partnered with South Shore Safety to offer your child safety education classes.

For 6th – 8th Graders

  • Is your child mature enough to be a babysitter or a mother’s helper?
  • Will your child be safe & responsible when babysitting?
  • Does your child know what to do in an emergency situation?

When parents choose to leave their children with a babysitter, they are looking for someone who is mature and fully prepared to handle emergency situations. Children want their babysitter to be lots of fun and creative. This interactive, hands-on, three-hour class, taught by South Shore Safety health educators, will help prepare your son or daughter to be the best babysitter on the block!

Home Alone, Staying Safe

South Shore Medical Center has partnered with South Shore Safety to offer your child safety education classes.

Saturday, June 10, 2017
9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

For 4th – 6th Graders

  • Is your child ready to stay home alone?
  • Will your child be safe & responsible when home alone?
  • Is your child “street smart” when going to and from the bus or school?

“Home Alone Staying Safe” is a 3-hour program which prepares kids for situations that can happen when staying home alone, from the unexpected knock on the door to the 911 emergency phone call. It will also help ease the minds of parents who decide the time has come to leave their kids home alone or with siblings. This interactive and fun course, taught by South Shore Safety health educators, covers a range of safety topics:

Organic Foods & GMOs: Basic Need to Knows

Are you looking for answers to questions like: Should I buy organic foods? or, Are GMOs bad? Pondering answers to questions like these can be confusing and often lead to more questions! It can be quite a challenge sifting through the abundance of available information on topics like these, making it even more difficult to know which foods to purchase. Join Registered Dietitian Tahlia Adler on May 23rd and learn to decipher the meanings of terms like “organic” and “GMO,” and how to make the best choices for you and your family. This event is free of charge and open to all.

ABCs of Diabetes

An educational session with a Certified Diabetes Educator, in a small group setting, designed to help you gain a solid understanding of your diabetes. Learn how to better control your blood sugar, make healthier food choices, and play an active role in your diabetes care plan. Understand the various factors that impact blood sugar and the when, how, and why of checking it regularly at home. Learn how diabetes affects your whole health, and how through optimal management, you can prevent serious complications and live healthfully with diabetes. You will receive valuable diabetes management and nutrition resources.

South Shore Hospital’s Center for Physical Wellness offers both exercise programs (in the gym) and aquatics programs (in the pool) for patients suffering from arthritis; for individuals preparing for a total joint replacement; and for anyone looking to improve flexibility & strength, and manage pain.

support group Brigham and Women’s Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (Information Sessions) at South Shore Medical Center in Kingston

2nd Wednesday of every month
6:00 – 7:30 p.m.

Brigham and Women’s Hospital’s Center for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery will be offering information sessions at South Shore Medical Center’s Kingston office for patients interested in learning more about weight loss surgery. By attending an information session, patients will learn about the different surgical procedures, insurance coverage, diet changes and more. A surgeon, dietitian and administrative team member will be on hand to answer any related questions.

These bariatric information sessions will be offered on the second Wednesday of the month beginning in May 2016 from 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. at South Shore Medical Center, 5 Tarkiln Road, Kingston, MA.

Livestrong at the YMCA

This is a 12-week small group education and exercise program designed for adult cancer survivors. This program fulfills the important need of supporting adult cancer survivors physically and emotionally to return to their normal life or their "new normal" This program meets twice a week for 90 minutes and is conducted outside of medical facilities to emphasize that Livestrong at the YMCA is about overall health, not disease.

Do you have high cholesterol? Has your doctor recommended an appointment with a Dietitian to assist you in lowering your cholesterol through diet and exercise? The Nutrition department has a Cholesterol Clinic in place, for individuals with high cholesterol. These clinics are small group appointments, comprised of 2-5 patients. Each person has his/her own individual results reviewed and assessed, and everyone receives individualized recommendations based on his/her specific cholesterol profile.

Learn what your different cholesterol numbers mean and the important steps you can take to improve your results and lower your risk of developing heart disease! Discover the most effective dietary interventions, and learn which supplements and functional foods are safe and beneficial.

Cholesterol Clinics are available during evening hours.

A Matter of Balance

Have you fallen in the past or are concerned about falling? This award-winning program offered by the Quincy Weymouth Wellness Initiative will help you make changes that will reduce your fall risks and increase your strength and balance. Program is free and meets once a week for eight weeks at a location in the community.

Tai Chi

Tai Chi is a non-competitive, self-paced program comprised of gentle physical activity, stretching and deep breathing to improve muscle strength, flexibility, balance, and aerobic conditioning. Tai Chi is a graceful form of exercise that involves a series of movements that are performed in a slow, focused manner combined with controlled breathing. It is a low impact exercise that puts minimal stress on muscles and joints.

Cardiac & Pulmonary Transitions

Individualized group exercise program for individuals transitioning from cardiac rehabilitation. This class will provide structured workouts based on individual needs.

My Life, My Health

This free six-week educational program teaches skills to improve communications with providers and prevent, manage and cope with chronic conditions such as high blood pressure and pre-diabetes.

Men’s and Women’s Health

South Shore Hospital’s Center for Physical Wellness offers both exercise programs (in the gym) and aquatics programs (in the pool) for men and women of all ages and abilities, and of varying levels of strength, flexibility, and endurance. Programs are designed to increase/maintain bone density, strengthen core, and improve posture. There are classes designed for seniors and others for pre- and postnatal women.

Parkinson’s/Post-Stroke

In a small group setting, you will learn the basics of nutrition and meal planning for improving your blood sugars, the benefits of exercise, and how to incorporate these healthy changes into your lifestyle and help your efforts to prevent Diabetes. The group is run by a Certified Diabetes Educator and/or a Registered Dietitian.

South Shore Hospital’s Center for Physical Wellness offers both exercise programs (in the gym) and aquatics programs (in the pool) for individuals of all ages looking to improve their overall fitness by increasing strength, endurance, and flexibility. Additional programs focusing on managing stress and improving body composition and cardiac health are also available.

Sign up for a FREE 8-week Community Group Counseling program offered by the Quincy Weymouth Wellness Initiative and held at a community location. The program is led by trained Tobacco Treatment Specialists with a proven curriculum from the American Lung Association. Sessions create a supportive environment and include health education, behavior modification, lifestyle change, coping strategies, nutrition and physical activity tips. Participants will receive “quit kits,” healthy snacks and more!

Adult weight management program

Learn how to lose weight and keep it off. Set achievable goals, eat healthy, exercise, plan quick and easy nutritious meals, decipher nutrition labels and packaging claims, and maintain a healthy lifestyle!

Open to all patients with a SSMC Primary Care Provider.

Morning & Evening Sessions available each week (two topics/month).

  • The 1st and 3rd Thursdays, 6:00 – 7:00 p.m.
  • The 2nd and 4th Wednesdays, 8:30 – 9:30 a.m.

These groups are facilitated by Registered Dietitians.

  • Weight checks at each session
  • Receive healthy meal plans, recipes, and lots of tools and resources to help manage weight, successfully.

Cost

$100 for 8 sessions (due at first session). Sessions do not expire.

Registration is required for all sessions.*

Attendance at consecutive, bi-weekly sessions is recommended but not required. Register for 8 sessions in advance or for a few at a time. (Sign up in advance to reserve your spot in each. There are 10 slots available each session.)
