October is National Breast Cancer
Awareness Month

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and thanks to improvements in treatment and early detection, millions of women are surviving breast cancer today.

The goal of screening mammograms is to find cancers before they start to cause symptoms. Breast cancers that are found because they can be felt tend to be larger and are more likely to have already spread beyond the breast. In contrast, breast cancers found during screening exams are more likely to be small and still confined to the breast. The size of a breast cancer and how far it has spread are important factors in predicting the prognosis for a woman with this disease.

Most doctors feel that early detection tests for breast cancer save many thousands of lives each year, and that many more lives could be saved if even more women and their health care providers took advantage of these tests.

Mammograms should be performed yearly, starting at age 40. Please call our Radiology department today to schedule your appointment (781-261-4610) or request an appointment online or through MyHealth.

Wellness Services for our Patients with Diabetes

Diabetes affects one in four Americans and if not treated can result in multiple complications including: blindness, nerve damage, kidney disease and heart disease.

We would like to offer you services, support and educational resources through our Wellness Department here at SSMC so that you can have a healthy future.

Nielsen Eye Services

People with diabetes are at higher risk for complications in the eye, kidney, nerves and heart. In particular, diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in most adults. However, with regular check-ups, eye problems may be preventable and treatable.

We have joined with Nielsen Eye Center to provide diabetic eye testing at our Norwell, Kingston and Libbey locations. See the Nielsen Eye Clinic schedule here. Stop by our front desk or call 781-878-5200 to schedule your appointment or request an appointment online or through MyHealth.
