Vioxx Withdrawn From Market
Vioxx was taken off the market 9/30/04 by the manufacturer, Merck, because of new evidence of an increased risk of heart attacks and strokes. The cardiovascular risk from Vioxx is very small and is not a factor until the medication has been taken for over 18 months. Whatever risk does exist from the medication goes away very quickly once the medication has been stopped. Anyone who has stopped the medication should have no ongoing concerns.
The concerns about Vioxx arose while the medicaion was tested for its effectiveness in preventing the recurrence of colonic polyps which can evolve into colon cancer. During this trial, called the APPROVe (Adenomatous Polyp Prevention on Vioxx) trial, an increase in serious heart attacks and strokes were seen after 18 months on the medication.
If you think you have had an adverse effect related to the use of Vioxx, you can report it to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or call 1-800-FDA-1088.
If you have been taking Vioxx to relieve symptoms of arthritis, musculoskeletal pain or menstrual pain, there are many other options. Over-the-counter medications such as Ibuprofen, Aleve and Tylenol may help. If you have already tried these medications unsuccessfully, please contact your primary care physician to discuss appropriate alternatives.
