One of SSMC’s "Founding Fathers" Passes
On November 4, 2004, the South Shore Medical Center lost one of its "founding fathers." Dr. Donald Garland passed from this earth, leaving behind a legacy he created in 1962 along with Drs. Gerald Collins, Wallace Kemp, Frederick Freidman and Arthur Garceau. They came together as a group of physicians, a revolutionary concept at the time, to better serve patients.
Today, their vision lives on in a thriving practice of over 40 physicians and health care providers supported by over 350 employees in two locations, Norwell and Kingston. Always kind and considerate, Dr. Garland was a highly trusted physician touching the lives of thousands of people on the South Shore for decades. He will be remembered not only for what he gave to the community but also for what a wonderful person he was to everyone he knew.
Our sympathies go out to Mrs. Garland and his extended family. His spirit will forever live on in the care members of the South Shore Medical Center provide to the patients we serve on the South Shore.
